China Airlines again wins International Trophy in 2008 Rose Parade in California

With its splendid float “Carnival of Taiwan - The Golden Lion,” China Airlines again won the International Trophy for the most beautiful entry from outside the continental US in the annual Rose Parade. The 2008 trophy marked the 17th time that China Airlines has won an award in the Rose Parade, which is held every New Year’s Day in Pasadena, California.

The theme of the 2008 Rose Parade was “Passport to the World’s Celebration,” and the China Airlines float fit the theme perfectly. The theme of CAL’s 55-foot-long float was “Carnival of Taiwan,“ and the creator was the world famous float designer Raul Rodriguez. The float, 18 feet wide and 35 feet high, was covered with a variety of Taiwan butterfly orchids, roses and chrysanthemums in shades of yellow, gold and white to depict the joy and spirit of a carnival.

To match the theme of the Parade, China Airlines introduced Taiwan’s famous handicraft, Cochin Ceramic, to the appreciative audience with a larger-than-life playful golden lion that helped celebrate the New Year by chasing away evil spirits. The lion is a perpetual symbol of joyous celebration in local festivals, and “Carnival of Taiwan” fully represented the joy and spirit of Taiwan.

China Airlines began its participation in the Rose Parade in 1987, and during the past 22 years, its Rose Parade entries have won great publicity for Taiwan, and for the company. A total of 46 floats participated in the Parade this year, and more than 100 million viewers watched the television broadcast of this cherished, century-old celebration.
